Light and Crispy Homemade Croutons is a quick and easy recipe. You will wonder why you never made them at home before.
Restaurant croutons are almost always light and crispy. I've found that when making a salad and garnishing it with store-bought options, it is hard to replace that light texture.
But, when you make a batch of homemade you will be amazed at how simple it is to do and how light, crispy, and flavorful they turn out.
Recipe Ingredients
A few simple ingredients and an oven are all you need to make these croutons. You can use any type of sliced bread. Whole wheat, whole grain, premade, or homemade.
To crisp the bread extra virgin olive oil is drizzled over the bread cubes.
Season with onion and garlic powder, salt and pepper.
How to Store
Homemade croutons are light and crispy. In order to keep that texture, store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks, if they last that long.
How to Prepare Homemade Croutons
Preheat oven to 350F.
Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Cut bread slices into one-inch cubes and place in a bowl.
Drizzle with olive oil. Reserve 1 tablespoon to brush on after turning. Toss to combine.
Sprinkle with onion, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Toss bread cubes again.
Spread into single layer on baking tray.
Place tray in preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes.
Take a spatula and turn croutons. Brush cubes lightly with remaining oil.
Bake for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from oven and cool.
What to Serve With Homemade Croutons
Homemade croutons are so good you may want to eat them as a snack, but are great used as a garnish. Add to a salad, like Caesar Salad, or as a topping for a soup, like Acorn Squash and Sweet Potato Soup.
