But, don't worry you still get all the flavor of traditional lasagna made with sweet Italian sausage-flavored ground turkey.
This lasagna recipe will make you never go back to the fussy layered Italian dish. Quick and easy, this all-in-one pan dish will give your family all the Italian flavor they are looking for with a lot less fuss and clean-up.
Ingredients
Ground turkey if prepared without herbs and spice can have a bland flavor. This recipe uses a variety of herbs and spices to flavor the ground turkey for a flavor similar to Italian sweet sausage.
My Sweet Sausage mix includes:
- parsley,
- Italian seasoning,
- caraway seeds,
- smoked paprika,
- onion powder,
- garlic powder,
- cayenne pepper,
- salt and pepper.
Instructions
Step 1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Next, add chopped onion, stir, and saute for 2-3 minutes until the onion softens. Add minced garlic and stir.
Step 2. Add turkey to the hot pan over medium heat. Press turkey with the back of a spatula into a flat layer. Allow to cook undisturbed for 5-7 minutes. Sprinkle with half the spice mix. Check the edge of the turkey to confirm browning. Use a spatula to turn the turkey once. Sprinkle with the remaining spice mix. Allow the turkey to sear for 3-5 minutes over low heat. Watch for over-browning and adjust heat as necessary. Once browned, break up the turkey into smaller bite-sized pieces. Stir and mix with onion. Spread evenly over the bottom of the skillet.
Step 3. Place lasagna noodles over turkey. Add broken pieces to the edge of the pan as needed to cover the turkey.
Step 4. Pour chopped tomatoes, pasta sauce, and water over noodles. Cover the skillet with a lid, adjust heat to low heat, and allow to simmer for 20 minutes. Check after 10 minutes to ensure enough moisture and add up to a 1/2 cup of water if needed. Check for noodles for doneness. Continue to simmer, covered for an additional 10 minutes.
Step 5. Spoon 8 heaping tablespoons of Ricotta cheese evenly over the skillet Then, cover and continue to heat for 5 minutes.
Step 6. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly over the skillet. Turn oven on broil. Place the skillet on a top rack under the broiler. Next, heat for 5 minutes until the cheese melts and starts to brown. Sprinkle with chopped fresh basil.
